Australia PM Abbott officially opens new James Cook University Singapore campus

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has officially opened James Cook University's new Singapore campus on Sims Drive.

Also present was Senior Minister of State for Law and Education Indranee Rajah. The university has been in Singapore since 2003, operating out of the Spring Singapore Building in Bukit Merah.

It then moved to its previous campus on Upper Thomson Road in 2008 before making its way to the current 24,000 square metre premises in February 2015. Students from its Ang Mo Kio campus will also move over, and begin their lessons at the new campus in July.

JCU is the only wholly owned and independently run foreign university in Singapore since the closure of the University of New South Wales' Singapore campus in 2007.

Mr Abbott said that as Australia focuses more and more towards strengthening its links with Asia, universities focused on the tropics like JCU would be very well placed to move boundaries. He also said that through the new Colombo plan initiated by his administration, "the tide of students now flows both ways".

"We are returning the compliment that Singapore has paid to us by learning as much in your country as you have over the decades learning in ours," he said.

JCU Singapore is the first and only private education institution in Singapore to have attained the EduTrust Star quality mark from the Council for Private Education (CPE), the highest attainable for any private education in Singapore.

The EduTrust Star is given to institutions that excel in all key areas of management and the provision of quality education services. This mark is also a symbol of recognition for sustained efforts in organisational improvement.

Since the 1950s, more than 130,000 Singaporeans have graduated from Australian universities.

SINGAPORE - Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott officially opened the new James Cook University Singapore campus on Sunday morning.

The campus, which sits on 24,000sqm of land along Sims Drive, boasts state-of-the-art facilities such as a financial trading room and classrooms equipped with smart Apple TVs.

It is located on the former premises of Manjusri Secondary School, and is nearly three times larger than the old campus along Upper Thomson Road.

The new campus can house up to 5,000 students. It is a branch of James Cook University, which is based in Queensland, Australia.
